A Florida teenager who plummeted 100 feet from a Wisconsin amusement park ride has returned to the state to promote an expansion project at the hospital that likely saved her life.

Hospital staff and others watched in awe Monday as 14-year-old Teagan Marti strode across the lobby at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison under her own power, using only a walker for support. The teen, whose spine was severely injured in the July 2010 fall in Wisconsin Dells, appeared at a news conference to promote funding for the $32 million hospital expansion.

Mount Olympus re-creating Atlantis

Excavation is under way at Mount Olympus on the ruins of the Lost City of Atlantis.

Archeologists predict the outdoor water fortress situated in front of the Triton water slide complex will rise six stories in the air and span an area of three acres.

Owner of Mount Olympus Water and Theme Park Nick Laskaris said the formerly lost city will feature seven water slides, a massive dump bucket and a geyser, which, on a regular interval throughout the day, will shoot water 12 stories into the sky.

X-Flight ‘like riding on the wing of a plane’

A year ago this week at Six Flags Great America, director of maintenance/construction Gary Pohlman dealt with the headache of digging new pools for Hurricane Harbor while the Lake County landscape was frozen rock-solid and covered in two feet of snow.

But Tuesday’s spring-like conditions brought a new set of obstacles for crews building the X-Flight roller coaster in County Fair — with temperatures pushing 55 degrees, the ground had taken on the consistency of pudding.

“It’s a mud pit,” Pohlman said with a rueful smile, standing in the shadow of the American Eagle as heavy equipment lumbered through the muck. “We prefer hard ground to move around on at this point. We got all the concrete put in before the holidays, and since then, we’ve been praying for cold, but it’s not working.”

Kalahari Resort unveils pair of looping waterslides

Kalahari Resort on Tuesday took the wraps off the SuperLoop Sahara Sidewinders, a pair of looping waterslides with trap-door chambers that have been added to the resort’s 124,000-square-foot indoor waterpark in Lake Delton.

Installation of the first indoor looping slides in the nation were part of a multimillion-dollar improvement project that started in September at the 11-year-old resort along Interstate 90-94.

“They’re pretty intense,” Travis Nelson, the resort’s spokesman and “chief slide officer” said of the new looping slides. “But you want to go back and ride them again, and again.”

Bay Beach Amusement Park funds may be spun off from other Green Bay parks

For years, Bay Beach Amusement Park has been so profitable that it supported other city of Green Bay operations.

Starting next year, it might support only itself.

A Green Bay City Council committee on Tuesday endorsed a plan to establish a separate fund for operating and maintaining the waterfront amusement park.

The city-owned attraction generates sales of more than $2 million a year, much of which historically has been used elsewhere in the city.

Laskaris (Mt Olympus) buys Copa Cabana

Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park, under the ownership of Nick and Eva Laskaris, has expanded once more to include Copa Cabana Resort Hotel & Suites.

In an interview Monday, Nick said he bought the property in part because it will serve as the entry to the properties he owns along Wisconsin Dells Parkway, – The Strip. The Copa Cabana has an elevated walkway over highway that has been there since the 1960s, according to the history of the resort on the Copa Cabana web site.

Nick said the walkway is iconic, being the only bridge across the highway and plans to use it to mark the beginning of the numerous properties he owns along the Strip.
